Battleship Cove

WWII Weekend

Subject: Battleship Cove AAR

On September 2nd through 4th troops of the 104th regiment took part in a public awareness event held at the Battleship Massachusetts Museum under the command of Lt. John DiPersio. Unit members arrived Friday night and slept aboard ship. Equipment displays were then set up on Saturday morning in the PT boat building. The YD personnel were also accompanied by members of the Navy, Marines, and even some soldiers from other nations. Saturday night troops enjoyed a good meal at the local diner and then proceeded back to the ship's Wardroom where movies were played. Sunday, displays continued in the same location. Our troops were well received by the public. Many questions were answered and some business cards handed out. Thank you to the following troops for their participation:

YD Goes Navy After Action Report
Members,
This past weekend the YDHRG traveled to Fall River, Ma. and boarded the USS Massachusetts as Navy and Marine personel. As well as Army and various other branches. Displays were set up under the awning by turret #3. These were well recieved by the visiting public. At approx. 1000 hrs. the entire ships company was requested to observe and take part in a test of the new Pearl Harbor exhibit that will be unveiled to the public in August after the final tweeks are applied. So far so good. Once all the features are installed it should be quite the show. At one point I was looking for low flying aircraft. An E-board meeting was also held on Saturday afternoon. Capt. Devlin resigned his commision as of August 1, 2011. Lt Kersting was named acting CO for the remainder of this year. A new CO will be chosen at the general meeting in Oct. At 1700 once the ship was closed to the public, most went out to dinner at the local dinner not far from the ship. This was a good time with much comradere'. As I had other commitments on Sunday I then traveled home. A portion of the ships co. stayed overnight and continued displays and walking impressions.

I would like to thank all those who were able to make it this year for all your efforts, which helped make this event great for all concerned, helped it run smoothly, educate the public and sell the items we had for sale....everyone chipped in and got it done.....

Weather was perfect---NO RAIN---sunny with a breeze, lots of people in camp especially-huge crowds on Fri, Sat. smaller crowd on Sun. Lots of picture taken of B Co troops and display set ups... had a bunch of old Vets stop in and compliment B Co on its display throughout the weekend.....trained 4-5 WC drivers and took part in the vehicle parades through Reading and at the airfield, a few of the troops took part in the french village battles...and also enjoyed both the French Village Cafe/Tavern at night and the dance Fri & Sat night..

They put us on the same site we have used every year we have attended this event-----Made contact with Signal unit behind us that sets up their kitchen and they said next year we can eat with them if we want to for 3 meals Fri, 3 on Sat., 2 on Sun. for $30 just need to give them a headcount before the event and provide KP's and a cook if we have one there... Had one small hiccup with a pilot who wanted to park his plane into our area--I got that fixed with a discussion I had with him, plane was moved out of our space---no problems after that...

Special thanks to those who were able to
1.arrive on Thurs to help set up our display area,
2.everyone was on site from Fri morn. till 3 pm Sun.
3.those who stayed till the show closed to the public Sun to help take down and pack up all the tents.. Way to work together to get it done...

Those who were able to attend this event did a great job and made B Co stand out as the " Best of the Best " as usual.. OUTSTANDING JOB ladies and Gentlemen of B Co. 104th Inf. 26YD.. Lets do it again next year only with a few more display's and troops...

Hopefully we will be invited back next yaer--mark your calenders --next year the show is on JUNE 1-2-3 2012, for those interested we have also reserved a block of 6 rooms at the hotel some of us stayed at this year the price is being worked out and will be posted as soon as we know.

Now lets get ready for the events we have left in 2011, beginning with the June 12 Bunker Hill parade,
June 25 ceremony, July 4 Norwood parade and the first large scale tactical of the year being held near Dunbarton, NH (instead of Windsor,VT.) July 15--16

SUPER JOB-----OUTSTANDING DAY : Thanks to all --23 individuals--who showed up and took part in the super training that was put on. Those who missed it missed a really good one...hope to see you all at the next training event.

Tom K for all his efforts to get the site at Sterling ready and hosting the training day.. next time your there ask for a tour of what I will after seeing it for the first time call " Sgt Tom's Museum " it is something you have to see, it is amazing.. His workshop is also amazing... Next in April up for B Co.--Lexington Parade the 18th and Ceremony at Fort Tabor, New Bedford,MA. the 23d. Battleship Massachusetts

In 2011, the Battleship Massachusetts will return to action — at least on certain weekends.

The newly formed USS Massachusetts Living History Group will recreate an authentic, operational Navy company and Marine detachment aboard ship. The all volunteer crew is dedicated to supporting the mission of the Battleship Massachusetts Memorial in educating the public about the role of the "Big Mamie" during World War II.

"Our goal is to bring the ship back to life just as she was during the war," says Commander George Devlin, president of the group. A former Sea Cadet on the Mamie in the 1980s, Devlin prefers to call his group living historians rather than reenactors.

"We try to actually re-live the history of the ship," he says.

Rather than merely viewing artifacts and passively receiving information from static displays, a living history approach transports visitors back in time, allowing an opportunity to interact with impressionists interpreting the period. According to Devlin, Battleship Cove Executive Director Brad King is laying ambitious plans to transform the world's largest naval ship exhibit into just such an exciting interactive experience.

"Brad King has given us his full support," says Devlin. "Whatever equipment we'd like to use on the ship, he'll get it operational for us."

Volunteers plan to stand watch, just as crew members would on an active duty ship, providing a glimpse of what daily life was like aboard the wartime vessel.

"When we're here, we'll raise and lower the colors, use the ship's signal flags, and even simulate an authentic shipboard sick bay," says Devlin. The historians also plan to conduct by-the-book battle station drills and mock attacks by manning the ship's anti-aircraft guns.

Volunteer Bob Barber of Bedford, N.H., a 27-year Navy veteran and retired chief petty officer, brings his considerable experience and expertise to the group. Barber served on cruisers and destroyers and saw duty as an assault boat coxswain during the Vietnam war. Barber also trained as a naval aviator.

Pointing to the T-28 Trojan training plane on display at Battleship Cove, Barber says, "I flew that very aircraft while qualifying at Weymouth Naval Air Station."

Carl Kersting, a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, and a veteran bridge officer in the Merchant Marines, serves as a lieutenant commander in the crew's chain of command and is the living history group's vice president.

Chris Texeira, a self-described history buff, acts as the group's vice president of women's units. Although women were never actually a part of a battleship's crew, nurses, USO volunteers and various female administrative personnel were often aboard ship while in port.

Sharply attired in a period Navy Wave uniform at the group's inaugural Jan. 15 meeting, Texeira said she wanted to make the experience more family oriented.

I see little girls touring military exhibits with their families looking completely bored," says Texeira. "I think having women interpreters authenticates the period and enhances the experience for everyone."

Jim Pereira, the crew's Chief Petty Officer and the organization's secretary and treasurer, deftly sums up the partnership between Battleship Cove and the enthusiastic members of the living history group.

"It's a unique opportunity," says Pereira. "Where else can you find someone who'll let us come and play in a museum?"

Battleship Cove is home to Massachusetts' official memorial to all Bay Staters killed in service to their nation during World War II. Located on board USS Massachusetts, this memorial symbolizes the eternal gratitude of a proud Commonwealth and nation.

Old YD meets New YD

On Friday October 22 through Sunday October 24 Elements of Company HQ, 1st Platoon, 26th Division Photographic Section, 166th Photographic Company & the Red Cross deployed to US Army Post, Camp Edwards, Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod Massachusetts to participate in the Camp Edwards Open House.

After some debacle of logistics, EXAMPLE: failure of access list being located at the main gate, frustrated troops being turned away due to the failure of communication, cold weather ect.. Baker Company completed setting up camp per regulations and troops wound down and sacked out.

Saturday Oct 23 Troops awoke to Revile formed for chow served by the Baker Company Mess section and began their training day. The 1st Sergeant performed magnificently in preparing and scheduling troops for duty and rendering an informative ear to the general public as they enter the Baker Company Camp. 1st Platoon assembled to render Infantry support to the armored units on the assault of the Nazi position. The Armor we supported was 1 Sherman Tank, 1 M24 Chaffee Tank, 1 M 47 Walker Bulldog and 1 M 5 Stuart.

The Assault: The column of armor struck north through the trees and brush with Baker company 1st Platoon, lead by 1st LT. Kersting and Platoon Sergeant Kosewski. The Armor spotted the German position and began firing, elements of the German unit returned fire. Baker Company flanked right clearing German infantry from the advancing US Armor column. After eliminating the heavy machine gun nest the Armor units flanked the German position on the left. Baker Company pushed through the thick terrain eliminating and capturing the remaining Germans. Fighting was fierce, heavy casualties were taken on both sides.

The Encampment: Unlike Friday, the rest of the weekend went by fast and was well received by the general public. SSgt Brissette & Pvt James Pereira put on outstanding meals for the troops of B Company. First rate top notch chow. The Baker Company Mess section has outdone themselves, GREAT JOB gentlemen. Troops performed an Inspection of Infantry Soldiers gear lead by SSgt Volk. Squad leader Volk performed a mastery of education to the troops of 1st Platoon. All the troops in the unit should hold their heads up high knowing full well they were the sharpest allies on the Cape. Baker Company received complements from the US Army Camp Edwards for our outstanding attention to detail & authenticity as well as from the numerous numbers of veterans from WWII & Korea who remember the days of old when they served, using the similar materials, gear and equipment we use to commemorate them. The ARC & ANC display area received much attention as well as the Company Supply area. The troops marched about and performed manual of arms as the encampment was buzzing like a bee hive.

Saturday Evening: The Camp Edwards Gym was decked out in Base memorabilia fashion for a USO dance much like what we see at the GAP. The gym was bigger, more seating and the music was a live “BIG BAND” with refreshments on hand with a majority of folks in period dress. It was a great time.

Sunday was a magnificent reflection of Saturday with just one little drawback, the Coast Guard Helo needed to take off and being that it was next to our area we were rushed to take down the camp. Again we were victorious in Battle, our displays were top notch our troops were the best of the best our Red Cross & Supply section were on the ball and first rate! Our encampment resembles the era and impressed all who walked through. Much of the local populous are eagerly waiting for us to come back.

There is no doubt in my military mind that this was the Best event I have attended since being elected Commander of Company B. The level of pride I have for each and every one of you is more than you can imagine. Your performance was outstanding, your steadfast dedication to the commemoration of our greatest generation was clear to see this past weekend. You all are “YD”.

All those who were able to make this event a success, Thanks a bunch. WE lived up to our motto "Best of the Best, We Accept No Less"..............
Hope everyone had as good a time as I did. The cooperation was Great. The battle area was great..... Those that couldn't make it--we'll be doing it again next year, you missed a good one.... isn't work a pain some times....hopefully we'll have a few more troops and vehicles next year.... The only negatives were the one way traffic on the Bourne Bridge due to construction and the temps at night.
B Co 104th 26YD, we accomplished our mission...to Honor those who served, educate the public and we sure as hell impressed the active duty command and troops who visited our display area...
We not only have been invited back but we " are to be the center piece of next years event"....I quote the Base Commander...and he said we will set up on the grass area not the hard pan....
As always Ken & Jim put on a feast, 5 star meals cooked on WWII stoves in the field. They do the work of what should be a 6 man cooking staff.....That is what usually staffs an Army Mess Hall in the field or a cantonment (Barracks area)......THANKS Guys for great meals....hope your feeling better Jim.
I don't know the final count but Diane, Chris and Joe made a bunch of cash selling T-Shirts, candy and other items to the public. There will be a lot of YD T-Shirts seen on the base for what I saw being bought by the modern day YD troops..
Jason's music as always added to the display, playing 40's tunes for that we and the public can enjoy to listening too. Jason,thanks for always bringing all that stuff to events I know it's no easy task and sometimes what you do goes unnoticed.. You also did a super job with trying to get in some training and the equipment inspection display was terrific, I was impressed at how many of our guys have all their stuff, can't wait to see what we have for a barracks display at the GAP 2011, great job laying all that stuff out for the inspection guys. super job, I know the public and the active troops were also very impressed with that display....
Due to your efforts we may pick up a few new recruits...we actually ran out of contact cards....

Equipmant Inspection

The equipment inspection went off wonderfully on Sunday and I want to thank the following troops for getting everything together like they did. This is the first time in my 8 years in the YD that I have seen so many troops all have a full kit of their own gear. As Top was saying afterwards, I can’t wait to see what we’ll all look like at the GAP this year! Good-bye Farby gear! If anyone needs a footlocker for the event, put the word out. Collings Foundation's Battle for the Airfield

During the weekend of October 8-10, 2010, elements of the 26YD HRG attended the Collings Foundation WWII event.
The weather was picture perfect for Fall, with plenty of bright sunshine and deep blue skies. Temperatures were mild during the day and cold at night. Spirits and enthusiasm was high for all the troops during the weekend which helped lead to a very successful effort by Baker Company and an enjoyable time for the spectators in the crowd.

Camp was established late Friday afternoon into the night. With the recent addition of new tentage, this event was the largest encampment that the 26YD HRG has seen since it's inception. All three of the pyramidal tents were up and in use. Headquarters consisted of a wall tent and fly which also housed communications. Supply had it's own wall tent and transportation was sheltered by it's own fly. Red cross was in attendance and provided it's services from the confines of a wall tent. Last, but not least, Mess section had it's own fly tent and provided a full service field kitchen feeding the troops throughout the weekend. Vehicles present were two jeeps, one ambulance and one 1 1/2 ton transport truck. For those personnel willing to work a little, there were two bicycles available for local transportation.

After a late night with lots of excitement and anticipation about the morning battle to come, the allied camp finally fell silent early Saturday morning. Reveille echoed through the cold, frosty air at 0630 followed by a bountiful breakfast served with a smile from the mess section.
B Company was ready to prep for the day's two battles and a variety of duties that would need to be completed during the day. After first formation and roll call, an all event participants meeting was held at the main hanger. Upon returning to camp, SSgt. Volk provided the necessary instruction and guidance for the troops prior to the field inspection of the bivouac area. By this time, the public was allowed in to the allied camp and the discussions and education with the civilians and veterans began. The allied command was well in to their pre-battle briefing for the morning encounter with the Axis forces.

The battle for the airfield #1 ensued at approximately 1130. The allied forces (26YD, 506 Airborne, Canadian Black Watch and Russians) fought bravely with support from a variety of tanks, halftracks, and other armored vehicles. The German forces defended the airfield with a variety or armored vehicles, artillery and air support ( Storch, Stuka dive bomber). When the smoke and dust settled, and the bullets ceased firing, the Germans won the battle. The good news was that the allied forces would be able to regroup and fight again.

Prior to the mid-day supper, B Company was surprised with an always motivating mail call. All the troops received letters and packages from loved ones at home. I believe there might have been one or two "Dear John" letters, but most of the news was well received as was the home made treats of cookies, breads, etc.

After another fantastic meal from the mess kitchen, the afternoon got started with a class on field telephone switchboard set-up and operation. After a successful switchboard class, and more interaction with the public, the afternoon battle preparations were once again underway by the Command staff.

During the afternoon battle for the airfield #2, the allied forces fought with all the blood and sweat they could muster, but ultimately were subdued by the axis forces. Tomorrow would surely see a better result as the Allied forces would once again persevere and try to claim victory in winning and securing the strategic airfield.

There was one more class held during the afternoon. Pfc. Carbone instructed a select number of troopers on the proper techniques of wire splicing. With the need for primary communications in the field being wired, it's essential that key personnel be knowledgeable in how to effectively splice a wire that has been cut. From all accounts, the class was successful and B Company has that many more troops ready to re-establish the "line of communication" when called upon.

Retreat was sounded during the day's final formation and supper was provided by the Collings Foundation.
The meal was adequate, but paled in comparison to the chow our mess section put out this weekend.

After socializing and reading some letters from home by the fire, the cold air set in again. Preparations were made by B Company to settle in and hunker down for another frigid night of sleeping.

Sunday's first light was greeted by reveille and a hearty, hot breakfast from B Company's Mess kitchen. Another great meal to fill the troops bodies with nutrition and motivation for the day's battles and activities.

The morning and afternoon activities mirrored Saturday's schedule with one big exception. Sunday was the day that saw the Allied forces overwhelm the Axis forces in battle. The superior battle strategies and tactics delivered by the Allies, were too much for the Germans to hold off this time. The airfield battle #3 was won by a determined and proud Allied Army.
The afternoon battle #4 for the airfield also resulted in a similar outcome with the Allied forces defending and maintaining control of the airfield. Shortly after the final battle, approximately 1600 hours, camp started to break and everyone began to pack up for the trip home.

All the living history participants and all the civilian spectators experienced a wonderful weekend that allowed them to step back in time, and if only for a couple of days, relive a time in history that was so important and instrumental in maintaining the freedom of the world.

It was a very successful event with fond memories made from the experiences of the weekend and the various conversations shared with a good number of WWII, Korean, Viet Nam and other period veterans in attendance. Two of the many veterans in attendance were World War II Medal of Honor recipient Francis Currey, and Korean War Medal of Honor recipient Thomas Hudner. May we all remember the stories told by these, and all the heroes from a previous generation so as to pass them on to anyone who is willing to listen. Tell the stories....tell the stories. Keep their memory alive!

CWO Barber - For bringing your 1 1/2 ton Chevy transport truck to display and haul the tired troops of B company from the battle field. Also, for your display at the transportation fly.

Pfc. Baril - For another outstanding weekend of capturing all the action, on and off the battlefield, with your video and still cameras. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Pvt. Wiegand - For bringing your ambulance and providing the public with an accurate depiction of what the ambulance driver dealt with during WWII.

Greetings and Salutations ALL!

Company B performed OUTSTANDING at the Collings Foundations "Battle for the Air Field" All members that attended should be proud of the great job they did, both in portraying the WWII Soldier in Living History and in "Kill'n Krauts!", Bidness Was GOOD!
You all did the veterans a great service and really drove home the look and appearance of those men and woman who made the ultimate sacrifice.

For all you that are attending Camp Edwards, Baker Company Mess Section will be having Saturday Morning Breakfast, Saturday Night Supper and Sunday Morning Breakfast. Thanks to the quick thinking of the Mess Sergeant the price for meals has been reduced to 4.00 a meal to YD troops. Total 12.00 to be sent to Ken Brissette 33 Spruce st. North Attleboro MA 02760 to cover your three meals at the Camp Edwards event.

All personnel attending please send an Email to the First Sergeant so he can create a list of personnel. This will help us determine how many Tents we will need, How many BC-611's we will need, EE-8's we will need, how much food the Mess Section will need, How many Military Vehicles we will need ....... well lets face it its one hell of a list and we cant be sure how much of what we will have to have without knowing how many troops we will have on the ground!

Also, there is scheduled a public battle each day , so remember to have some blanks if you wish to participate in Kill'n the NAZI HOARD!!!!!!!!

Rochester Display
On Sat August 21 members of Company B, 104th IR, 26th YD HRG participated in the Rochester fair day in Rochester Mass. The weather was warm during the day with low humidity.
The program was cut down to a one day event due to the Equine encephalitis scare that is gripping the area

10 Unit members participated in the Sat program talking to the folks who stopped by the Display tent/tarp to chat about the firearms, uniforms and life of a WW 2 soldier.

SSgt. Ken Brissette entertained the crow by riding his HD WLH motorcycle around the fair grounds to attract some additional attention our way

Other Military vehicles included approximately 10 Jeeps from a 42 MB up to a 70 151 Mutt With 96 miles on it.

The bigger iron included a White half track and a Dodge command car.

Other Re-enacting unit friends were in a attendance such as Don Robinson from the Quonset Point Museum,

which allowed us to say hello and renew old friend ships with folks we have not seen in a while.

A well deserved Bravo Zulu to those who made the long trip and lasted the day while insuring the mosquitoes

did not mount an attack on our encampment.

WWII Weekend

Battleship Massachusetts

During Labor Day weekend on September 3, 4 and 5 of 2010, elements of the 26th YD HRG took part in WWII special activities at Battleship Cove in Fall River, MA.

The weather cooperated just in time as Tropical Storm Earl grazed the New England coastline during Friday night in to the early morning hours Saturday. When the sun rose, the skies turned blue and a cool, strong wind dominated the remainder of the weekend.

Once again, Unit members set up a variety of educational displays in the Battleship Cove museum. Some members walked the surrounding area and ships welcoming, and interacting with the public. Unit impressions consisted of WWII US Army, Navy and Marines. Displays consisted of Army small arms, communications, combat photography, typical barracks personal items and clothing, red cross, navy clothing and personal items, and French small arms with personal items and clothing. Our fundraising table was up and operating once again. German and British displays were also in attendance.

One of the highlights of the weekend was when WWII Australian fighter / bomber pilot, Flt. LT. Alan Flemming provided the public and re-enactors with a wonderful account of some of his most memorable recollections of his thirty three missions flown over Germany, France and Belgium while with the RAF. Lt. Flemming was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courage, skill and valor displayed during his time spent flying an Avro Lancaster, mostly at night. It was an honor to listen, learn and interact with one of the hero's from WWII.

Following a great meal Saturday night, there was a surprise deployment celebration for TSgt. Paul Campbell who’ll be leaving for Kuwait and beyond with his National Guard unit in a couple of weeks. God’s speed Paul. Stay safe. Thank you for your service to our country!

The movie for the evening was, “They Were Expendable”, starring John Wayne and Donna Reed. The movie was well attended and enjoyed by all. A special treat for all was that the movie was shown on the main deck of “Big Mamie”. After the movie, lights out and all hands reported to their birthing areas on the ship.

Sunday morning started with another great meal followed by the flag raising and religious services. Once again the static and walking displays provided the public with a great opportunity to be educated on the various roles, duties and customs that the WWII soldier, sailor, and marine performed.

It was another positive, enjoyable, and educating weekend that the 26YD HRG participated in at Battleship Cove, Fall River, MA. We look forward to seeing all who attended this year, as well as those who could not make it, to next year’s BSC event.

A big thank you goes out to the BSC staff, specifically the executive director of BSC, Brian King, for allowing the 26 YD HRG the privilege to participate in this unique WWII weekend.

JV Day

Training for the 104th Infantry Reg. at Camp Pelham

On August 14, 15 elements of Company B, 104th IR, 26th YD HRG participated in the annual summer Training day and Garand match at the Pelham Fish and Game Club in New Hampshire. The weather was delightfully warm during the day with low humidity and the evening was cool for sleeping. The motto, "If it's raining, we're training" was not needed this weekend since no rain clouds were present.

Twenty seven Unit members participated in the weekend events which included various training classes in communications, battlefield tactics, proper sighting and firing positions with the M1 Garand, becoming a living historian, display of equipment and shelter pitching, drill for foot troops, awards ceremony, movies (feature film was the classic "Sergeant York" with Gary Cooper), E-board meeting and the Garand match on Sunday.

The chow was great as well! Thanks T-5 Greenwood for preparing nourishing and tasty meals. Without good food to fill the stomach, the soldier has little if no moral!

Thanks to all the instructors! Capt. Devlin, Lt. DiPersio, 1st Sgt. Mazzarella, SSgt. Volk, TSgt. Kosewski, SSgt.Floyd, SSgt. Mazzuchelli, and T-5 Greenwood. Without your efforts, there would be no training. Special thanks to SSgt. Volk for his coordination of the training day.

Special thanks for T-5 Greenwood for his coordination of Sunday's Garand match. The YD had six shooters and two spotters / advisers to help with the troops who took part in the match. Participants in the match were: Pvt. Machado, Pvt. Regan, Cpl. Floyd, Pvt. Violante, Pvt. Adamsky and Pvt. Rechia. Spotters were SSgt. Floyd and Lt. DiPersio. Scores will be e-mailed and posted on the Baker Company Bulletin in about one week. There was some good shooting from the YD members!
Thank you to all the participants! Your enthusiasm and eagerness to learn was very apparent to the senior cadre.

Weather was really good throughout the event but it was Hot-muggy - in the 90's during the day but you needed a blanket Sat. night.

Combat started at around 7pm Fri. eased off around midnight with small patrols and perimeter defense till 6am when active combat began again around 7:30am and went till 3pm Sat. lots of trigger time for all in attendance....both 1st and 2d Platoons went out on night patrols and joint actions both Fri and Sat... on Sat around 11:30am the B Co. HQ & Company area----note: we had 6 troops left to defend the area when attacked--rest of Company (22 troops) was out on the attack of German positions, the Canadian HQ and 82dAB area were also attacked and overrun by an SS unit... B Co. did a great job patroling and attacking the enemy throughout the event.

SSgt. Brissette and Pvt. Pereira did an outstanding job providing meals from the Co B Kitchen through out the event. Thanks for a great job

Fri. Supper . they provided B Co troops with half a chicken each with diced patatoes and carrots, bread and gator aid or coffee
Sat. Breakfast- they cooked up scrambled eggs, sausage & bacon, bread and coffee Supper--franks and beans, brown bread, watermelon
No one went hungry and there was always Gator aid or water available at the kitchen fly area.

Radio commo was OK but hopefully will get better for future events. one of our new radios had a problem and there were some deadzones out in the combat area which hampered the send and recev. of the radio's.. but it was good to get in some practice using radios and call signs during the action from Fri night till Sat late afternoon.

B Co. had 28 out of the 36 troops who signed on for the event actually at the event. we were the largest Allied unit at the event along with the Canadians, 505th & 506thAB... not sure how many Axis (German) troops were available but there were 4 Axis unit commanders at the commanders meeting on Fri..

The B Co. area had all 3 Squad tents set up, 4 wall tents and the kitchen fly, B Co. area was impressive, everyone had a place to store their gear and sleep under canvas. can't wait to see the pictures taken by Pfc. Baril and SSgt. Kosewski.......

Norwood 4th of July Parade
On July 4, 2010 elements of the 26YD HRG took part in the annual 4th of July Parade in Norwood MA.

The following AAR is a summary of the day's event.

It was a great day for a parade. The temperature was hot, the skies were filled with sunshine and clouds and the people of Norwood, and surrounding towns, were eager to see a parade.

YD troops and vehicles mustered at the rally point approximately 1600 hours. In attendance were twenty seven troops and six vehicles.

There were a multitude of tanks, armored and support vehicles which accompanied the 26 YD in the parade.

The parade stepped off at approximately 1750 hours. The crowds were anxiously awaiting the WWII contingency. There were quite a few veterans in the crowd. All were acknowledged with waves and smiles, thumbs up and hand shakes. The YD infantry was very interactive with the crowds along the parade route. As usual, the Unit was well received. Especially SSgt. Volk's patriotic music playing from the back of his jeep. This year's pace of the parade was faster then last year's pace. The parade took approximately forty five minutes to complete. The parade ended for the 26YD HRG at approximately 1835 hours. Some YD troops stayed after the parade for pizza.

It was a great day for a parade!

For everybody attending the Windsor Tactical bring rain gear, Half shelters, tarps, ect. anything to keep you dry in the field. For troop who have been in past years know it will rain.

Pelham Training Day
Here’s a warning order for the Pelham training event coming up. It’s still a ways off, but I want to give you an advance notice on the Uniform of the Day. Saturday August 14th the preferred uniform for enlisted men will be HBT’s / leggings / with roughouts or captoes and the M1941 Daisy Mae hat. Any HBT pattern will do, but the earlier the better. If you don’t have a Daisy Mae, a fatigue cap is 2nd choice. You have some time, so do some hunting and locate the gear. Alternate uniform if you can’t find (or afford) the HBT’s will be regular wools. This event we will be training on a variety of items so also bring your full field pack and kit. A reminder will be sent out as the event gets closer. If you’re short on equipment ask your squad leader for advice. For the officers, the uniform option is your choice as long as it’s early kit. Time to get out those Smokey the Bear hats out again!

Saturday night, we will get ourselves cleaned up a little and wear the Class A uniform (for those that have it). After dinner there will be an awards ceremony and a movie. This weekend will be representing stateside Camp Edwards training period 1941-42.

Sunday is a CMP match that the unit will participate in. (We will give a refresher on shooting basics part of the day Saturday.) Uniform Sunday is standard wools w/leggings. I’m looking real forward to this event; it will be nice to have a good flat area to train without the public to bother us. If anyone has thoughts on classes they want to see, I’m all ears. George, I want to thank you and your guys for comming!!!! That was really great, I had no idea how large it was. Figured it was a bunch of you all in pup tents.........lol. I heard ALOT of great comments about you guys. WE will certinly LOVE to have you back again!!!!! I promiss that you will be on LEVEL ground next time. In the past, we had used the lower field for the Vendors but got negative comments that the foot traffic was not there for them so we moved them back up where they were this year. I really hope to be at another location for next year so all of this hill crap will not be a issue but if it comes down to it for the same field next year. YOU guys can have the run of that location but save me a corner for some VN stuff. It sucks that I dragged alot of it out there and I never got a chance to set anything up. I hope to join you some time farther south with some of the other Living History shows to represent VN.

· YD Formation for the parade will take place at Coakley Middle School, 1315 Washington Street, Norwood, MA at 4:00 P.M., Step-off for the Parade is at 5:30 P.M. SHARP.

· The famous Norwood Fourth of July Parade kicks off at 17:30 with national and international marching bands. In addition, the parade has entertaining acts, floats and community groups. Don't miss out on this spectacular event!

I think, as a unit we should show up to public events in the same uniform as best we can. Some soldiers show up with HPTs other with wools and some mixed HBTs and wools. Hats we have Campaign, Garrison, Daisey Mae, and HBT cap. Boots, Leggings or two buckle.

I know everybody can't afford every uniform but if we stick to our Company's required uniform this should not be a problem.

CLOTHING (accurate representation of the WWII GI is our Goal)

M-41 Field jacket - An original or approved repro. Buttons should be the correct brown or olive color.

M1937 OD Wool Shirt -Original or approved reproductions
(I.E. w/shoulder straps) examples allowed.

M1937 OD Wool Trousers - Original or approved repro. Only mustard shade examples accepted.

Wool "Jeep" Cap - Original or approved repro in correct shade of OD (not green) wool.

Wool Overcoat - Original. Examples should have brass rather than plastic buttons.

Overseas Cap - Original or approved repro in correct OD wool.
Light blue piping or no piping, allowed.

EM Dismounted Raincoat - Original, approved repro, or postwar (same pattern) Preferred to the poncho.

5 Button High Neck Sweater - Original, approved repro, or modern GI with correct WW2 buttons.

Leather Palm Wool Gloves - Original, approved repro, or postwar French Army. The only type glove allowed.

HBT Fatigues - Original or approved repro. 1st or 2nd pattern jacket and trousers with 13 star metal buttons. Worn only for pacific war and select ETO events (per authenticity officers approval).

3/4 Roughout or Cap Toe Service Shoes - Original or approved repro.

Wool Scarf - Original or approved repro. Red Cross or cut from blanket style.

Wool Service Tunic - Original or approved repro. All unit insignia and awards are worn on this uniform.

M1923 Cartridge Belt - Original or approved repro. Khaki colored examples only.

M1928 Haversack - Original only, with meat can pouch.

M1910 or M1942 First Aid Pouch - Original khaki colored examples only.

M1910 Canteen cover - Original khaki colored examples only.

M1910 Canteen and Cup - Original with war time dates. Stainless steel examples preferred for health reasons.

M1938 Dismounted Leggings - Original khaki colored examples only.

M1910 E-Tool w/Cover - Original or approved repro "T" handled shovel w/khaki cover.

Lightweight Gas Mask Bag - Without mask. Original khaki, OD, or OD and Khaki transitional. Used to carry ammo, grenades, rations, etc.

M1 Steel Helmet w/Liner - Original only. Helmet must be the correct color and have split in rim located in the front. Fixed bales are preferred over flexible, but flexible are allowed. Straps must be khaki in color and sewn onto the bales. Liner must be of WW2 vintage and have khaki colored HBT suspension and leather chinstrap.

Helmet Net - The 3/4 inch British style net is standard for the 26th, but other types of net are acceptable.

Bayonet - Original 10 inch bayonet, new or cut down manufacture with M7 plastic scabbard. 16 inch M1910 or M1942 Bayonets are acceptable for early war (1941 - 1943) events.

M1940 Identification Tags (Dog Tags) - Original or approved repro "tooth" notched tags with chain.

Shelter Half - Original Khaki colored shelter half with either open or closed end. No OD allowed!

Shelter Half Pins and Poles - 5 original or approved repro wooden pegs, 1 original folding tend pole and guy line.

Mess Kit - Original M1926 mess kit with knife, fork, and spoon.

OD Wool Blankets (2) - Original, approved repro, or approved post war.

*Note - The use of M36 Suspenders and Musette Bags is NOT allowed in the 26th, with the exception of commisioned officers.

ATTENTION ALL Co. B TROOPS

As you all know we have a UNIT TRAINING scheduled for PELHAM, R & G Club, PELHAM, NH ---- August 14--15

Even thought this is 58 days away, I would like to start finding out who will be at this training so that we can do the following and give you all time to mark your calenders and make plans to attend.

1. Keep the Capt. Devlin, Lt's Dipersio, Dugrenier and Kersting
up to date on who will be at the training weekend

2. Make sure we'll have enough area to set up and park at the
club for the weekend---remember we are guest and club
members will also want to use their ranges and
club facilities....
3. Let Bob Greenwood know how many troops he will be
cooking and feeding---Sat. Breakfast, Lunch, supper and
Sun. breakfast He needs to know how much food to order
for these meals..we need to know what it will cost.
I am hoping that we can, as a Unit --have something
other then hot dogs or hamburgers for the Sat. supper meal.
4. Let LT. Dipersio coordinate with Sgt's Haggerty & Volk,
giving them some lead time to put together the training we
will take part in during the weekend. especially as it
pertains to events like the Battleship Mass.Cove, Odessa,
Ike farm (possible event), Collings Foundation and the
Cape Cod Camp Edwards events....
5. Give LT. Dipersio, Sgt's Haggerty & Volk an idea on who
they can task as instructors for the training
6. Give me an idea on how many unit squad tents, wall tents
and tent fly's we'll need, so everyone will have a place to
sleep Sat. night...and hold the classes in...

Hope you all can make this training weekend in Aug. These training weekends are what helps us as a unit portraying B Co 104th, 26YD better at what we do to honor those who served
in B Co during WWII....

Armory Day Celebration with Special Guests

Springfield, MA. On Saturday, June 26 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm at Springfield Armory National Historic Site – please join us for a very exciting day. Everyone is invited to experience a unique Native American POW WOW with dances, songs, games and drumming arranged as a special tribute to the Buffalo Soldiers. Spring-field Mayor Dominic Sarno will read a City Proclamation, acknowledging the important contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers. Artist and Iraq veteran, Tom Geas will dedicate his military statue to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. There will be blank firing demonstrations of shoulder arms and cannon. The Armory Museum will stay open until 6:00 pm . There will be food vendors. If RAIN, the event will move to the Springfield Technical Community College gymnasium. Admission is free. Recognizing the distinctive relationship between the Buffalo Soldiers and Native Americans, Community leader Gloria Peeler/Gentle Running Deer and the Native American Inter Tribal Council of Western Massachusetts will coordinate a POW WOW to honor the Buffalo Soldiers. Although enemies during the Indian Wars of the late 1800’s,, the Native Americans recognized the fighting skills of the African-American soldiers, and joined the term “solider” with that of the revered buffalo in tribute. Gloria/Gentle Running Deer stated that “It is important that the community know of the Native Americans who live here, and we want to educate the community about the Buffalo Soldiers and the Native Americans’ part in U.S. history.” A peace offering with the Buffalo Soldiers will heal the past and give thanks for the present.

Encampments are still a large part of Armory Day. Visitors converse with the Living History Reenactors who enthusiastically highlight their unit’s weapons and responsibilities in war time and explain how the weapons affected the outcome of battles during our Nation’s armed conflicts. Many reenactors will be in the company of their families who portray how civilians helped their soldier husbands during the Civil War.

Blank firing demonstrations of Revolutionary War and Civil War cannon, black powder Flintlocks and Percussion Rifles plus modern weapons are scheduled at 11:15am , 1:30 pm , and 3:30pm . Experience the blast of cannons and the sulfur smell of rotten eggs from the black powder firings.

Springfield Armory National Historic Site commemorates and preserves the site of our Nation’s first armory, established in 1794. The site of the repulse of Shays’ Rebellion, 1787; production of the nation’s first interchangeable parts; and home of the world’s largest historic American military firearms collection invites our visitors to share its history and beauty. A. will present to the Board for discussion any event of general interest to all the members of the organization and the unit.
B.Will present to the Board for discussion potential Unit activities.
C. will maintain an up to date calendar of approved events.
D. will ensure that the organization fulfills its goals and objectives through the educating of individuals and groups about the history of the United States during World War II.

Bunker Hill Day, Parade

On June 13 2010 at approximately 1100-1200 hrs, Troops of B Company assembled for the Bunker Hill Parade in Charlestown MA. The Parade Kicked off at 12:30 hours and proceeded throughout charlestown. Troops from 1st, 2nd Platoon where deployed on either side of the half track, Troops from 2nd Platoon and Signal Section provided a Color Guard. The Yankee Division was well received by the people of charlestown.

The show started of sunny--went to overcast and at around 2-2:30pm started to rain. 11 YD members were in attendance....
Many vehicles to look at, couple for sale, no one from the YD bought a vehicle but a couple were tempted.... CWO Bob was eyeing the landing craft all day..SSGT Brissette picked up a few things for his MC.

For the time we had there --we were visited by many of those attending the event, we answered a lot of questions, passed out a few membership forms etc... As always, the YD Co.B made a great impression on those visiting and running the show. Even met a few old members of the 26YD --1 actual 104th member stopped by to chat ....
Chris & Jim, Brian and I were interviewed by a TV station that was filming at the show...about our displays...
Except for the rain starting around 2-2:30 all went really well.....we packed up at 2:30pm and left the show. The unit is invited back for next years show......
